Tips to Be a Good Driver

Learning how to drive is not that difficult. However, learning how to drive well is another story! On a daily basis, we all come across bad drivers on the road, either because they’re careless or don’t have enough experience. Maybe you don’t want to be part of this group of people?

Discover how to be a good driver with some tips and learn a little bit more about car financing and how to choose the right car.

Stay Focused on the Road

Distractions can compromise your safety and cause you to make mistakes. It’s important to avoid them. Cellphones are one of the main distractions we can think of: Think about putting yours away before you start the car to prevent your device from disturbing you. At all times, don’t answer and don’t text while you’re driving.

If needed, a host of used cars now offers Bluetooth and allows you to answer without taking your eyes off the road.

To stay focused, avoid eating or drinking while you’re driving. Instead, keep both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road!

Follow Speed Limits

This basic rule is easy to follow, and yet high-speed driving remains the main cause of road traffic fatalities. As mentioned by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec:

Between 2017 and 2021, speed was involved in 31% of fatalities that have occurred among road users in Quebec. Another 29% were seriously injured and 18% lightly injured.”

On the highway, rely on the odometer and not on your feelings. For that matter, a good car for young driver shouldn’t be too powerful.

What are the cars you should avoid? Sport models and some luxury brands offer fast acceleration that might be difficult to control for an inexperienced driver. That’s without forgetting the temptation to experience some driving thrills…

Obey Traffic Signs and Signals

When we’re in a hurry, when we want to save time or when we have the impression of being alone on the road, we may tend to neglect traffic signs, signals and lights. Yet, non-compliance with these lead to many accidents!

To be a good driver, learn to obey:

  • Traffic lights

  • Stops

  • Pedestrian crossings

  • Any temporary or permanent signs and signals

If you see a yellow light ahead, definitely don’t try to accelerate. This common practice is dangerous both for you and for others.

Don’t Drive Under the Influence

It’s self-evident, but it often happens that this rule is not respected. You should never drive when:

  • You are tired.

  • You have a blood-alcohol level equal to or over 0.08 (80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood).

  • You have a THC level equal to or over 5 ng/ml of blood.

  • You have a blood-alcohol level equal to or over 0.05 and a THC level equal to or over 2.5 ng/ml.

Not only it’s dangerous, it’s also a criminal offence that can be very costly.

Do Some Checks Before You Leave

Before you drive, you have to make sure your car is in a good condition by checking, among other things, the tires and the windshield wipers. Generally, if you notice something unusual, you should have repairs or maintenance carried out and the part changed.

Your car is getting old and several components are starting to fail? It might be time to get a new pre-owned car.

Be Careful When You Take Curves

Whether you have experience or not, driving safely when you go through curves is important to avoid an accident. Stay focused and keep safe each time you approach a curve.

Look in the direction you’re going and slow down before you take the curve to avoid deviating. Turn the wheel using both hands and drive carefully, regardless of the road conditions.

Wear Your Seat Belt

Seat belts are not mandatory for nothing. Even if you’re driving slowly or for a short distance, seat belts have proven their worth and you should always buckle up before you start your vehicle. Making sure that your passengers are wearing theirs will also make you a better driver!
